Our National Myth

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (KJV)

Whenever difficult times come to America, many Christians cite 2 Chronicles 7:14 to prove that America has special covenant status with God and that her well being depends on the repentance of Christians. In this special episode of Critical Issues Commentary Radio we address this claim and show how the passage applies to national Israel in the Old Testament who did have a covenant with God. Christians under the New Covenant do not have a particular “land” promised to them by God. We cite material from the Puritans that is often used to prove that America has a covenant with God. However, when God enters into a covenant with man, he initiates the covenant. We question the validity of humans binding God to a covenant by their own initiative. The claim that 2 Chronicles 7:14 applies to America can rightly be called “our national myth.” We should pray for our nation and her leaders as all Christians in all lands should do for theirs. But as a country we have no special covenant status and it is erroneous to blame Christians for whatever is wrong with America.
