Critical Issues Commentary - The Great Commission in Matthew

March 9th 2024 MDT

This article carefully expounds the Great Commission in Matthew, phrase by phrase. The Great Commission is often cited by dominionists and others to prove some version of a social gospel. Since Matthew 28:16-20 contain the final words of Matthew; I show how each phrase in this commission must be understood in light of the themes previously revealed in the entire Gospel. I hope to give our readers a clear example of how authorial intent determines meaning. The most fundamental truth of conservative Bible interpretation i ...Continue Reading

Critical Issues Commentary Issue 141 Spirituality and the Corinthian Error

April 29th 2022 MDT

In  April 1992 we began Critical Issues Commentary. Issue 1 was about Binding and Loosing.  I recently found a printed copy of an article on the Corinthian Error that I wrote before CIC existed. We were able to recover that article and are blessed to publish it as Issue 141. The material in this article is as pertinent now, more than 30 years after it was first written. If anything, the advent of technology to instantly broadcast the false claims of the hyper-spiritual around the world accentuate the nee ...Continue Reading

November 7th 2020 MDT

*Our National Myth*2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. (KJV)Whenever difficult times come to America, many Christians cite 2 Chronicles 7:14 to prove that America has special covenant status with God and that her well being depends on the repentance of Christians. In this special episode of Critical Issues Commentary Radio we&nb ...Continue Reading

Solitude, Silence and StillnessEnneagram’s Fake Spiritual GrowthBy Bob DeWaay “/Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God./” (*Philippians 4:6*)  Mystics have promoted asceticism based on silence and solitude for more than a millennia. Church historian Justo Gonzalez highlights the beginning of desert monasticism in his book The /Story of Christianity Vol. 1/.[i] Gonzalez writes, “The very word ‘monk’ derives from the Greek /mo ...Continue Reading

[list_settings.list_name] Health and Ministry Update from Bob DeWaay

March 22nd 2018 MDT

Dear CIC Readers, Sunday, March 11, I was able to preach a sermon from Ephesians 1:1-3 with little health hindrance. For that I thank God who used the prayers of His people to restore me to the work of the ministry. I thank God for the many emails and cards of encouragement that came from CIC readers. I am very excited about preaching through Ephesians using some great help from current scholarship concerning the religious environment of Ephesus in particular and Asia Minor in a broader sense. The concerns of those ...Continue Reading
